Two ministries are responsible for water supply and sanitation in Denmark. The Ministry of Environment and Food in Denmark is responsible for the environmental regulation. The Danish Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Climate is responsible for the regulation of utilities and economic regulation of the sector.
At local level the 98 municipalities are local authorities concerning water and environment. They are responsible for local water plans and compliance with legislation and they hand the permits to the companies who are operating the utilities on a daily basis.
